General Job Duties A tanker driver is responsible for the pick-up and the drop-off of a specified liquid or gas. The driver must keep the truck properly maintained and must follow all safe driving regulations. A tanker driver has the ability to work independently as an independent contractor or can be part of a team of drivers for a large company. Strong communication skills are also needed. A tanker driver must have a CDL Class A license. The class A license is structured for large trucks and semi-trailers that weigh over 26,000 lbs and tow over 10,001 lbs.
