Three years later, I went to Ireland and was not given a landing card. While waiting in line at customs, I asked a worker about this and they said that I could get one at the desk. Sure enough I was still not given a card but the customs officer said that with was not an issue.

Hi Kaylee, welcome to the forum. Going from the US into is so quick you'll almost be surprised it happened at all. Going to Dublin, you don't need to do anything in advance. You get off the plane, walk through customs, and they stamp your passport. I think it took us literally about 15 seconds. We flew through Chicago and we did show our passport on the way to the gate, but I think that's just to verify you have one before you get on the plane.

They don't stamp it or anything other than looking at it. When you return, you go through US customs in Dublin, not in the US.

First you go through regular security, then you can mill about in the general concourse where there are shops and restaurants. They'll call over the loud speaker when it's time for you (not you, specifically, your flight) to go into the customs area. This is basically equivalent to going through security again, with the addition of presenting your declarations form. I found it helpful to download the fillable form before I left and pre-fill as much as possible. Then the night before my flight, I added all my purchases, so I wouldn't be scrambling to remember them at the airport. The only thing I had to add while at the airport itself was the duty-free items I bought there. I also found this video really helpful to give me an idea of what to expect: When you get back to the US, you've already been precleared, so you just walk off the plane as if it were a domestic flight.

Kaylee- Wendy's advice is good except be prepared for the possibility of a little longer than 15 seconds wait to clear Immigration. Depending on your arrival time and other flights that arrive at the same time you could be standing in line for 15-20 minutes. A lot depends on how many Immigration Officers are on duty. Before landing you will be given a card to fill out. It's going to ask for your name, address, nationality and your address in ireland. I usually just give them the address of the first place I'm staying.

When you get off the plane try to get to the Immigration area as quickly as you can. First come; first served. After you've reached the Officer (and I've never met one who was friendly and helpful) and given him your landing card you go to the baggage pickup area. After getting your bags you go through the Customs Process.
