I did the free windows 10 upgrade which upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 10 Pro 32 bit. The pc is just a HTPC and only had 2GB of ram. I added 2GB more and now want to upgrade to 64 bit Windows 10 pro.
I downloaded the media creation tool and created an iso file burned it to an external usb dvd drive. I set my bios to boot from it first. The screen just hangs at the Windows logo. I waited 5 minutes and still hung up with the dvd drive just spinning solid light as if no data was transmitting. I then tried to run the set up from another partion.
I received a message that I cannot install this version because it is of a different architecture. Windows was successfully activated after the upgrade. I'm confused. I thought that after I did the free upgrade and windows was successfully activated switching from 32 bit to 64 bit was free as long as it is the same version. Fully aware of the fact that I have to do a clean install.
Problem is that I can't get to that point. I can't boot from USB flash drive or USB DVD drive. Tried all 6 usb slots in back that are directly connected to the motherboard. I'm pretty sure my motherboard is on it's way out. Sound card in the pci express x1 stopped working all of a sudden.
